I Love Saltwater Fishing

Saltwater fishing tops my list of favorite things to do!  And in the saltwater fishing category, some of the most fun I've ever had has been fishing for marlin.  Over the years, I've personally caught three blue marlin.  These saltwater fishing beauties weighed 175 lbs., 225 lbs., and the biggie 700 lbs.  (YES, I got pictures with each fish!)  I released the two larger fish, but was unable to do so with the smallest one since he'd swallowed the lure too much to survive.

Cabo Tops Saltwater Fishing Places

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is without any doubt my absolute favorite places to go saltwater fishing for marlin.  That would seem pretty obvious since I've caught 3 of them there.  However, I've had the pleasure of saltwater fishing all over the world.  People in our boat caught marlin in Hawaii (off the southeast coast of Lanai) and Australia.  But for me, there's just something about saltwater fishing for marlin in Cabo San Lucas that I love!

Typically, I charter my own boat and experienced crew since there's usually several of my buddies with me on these saltwater fishing adventures.  I prefer a crew that is particularly seasoned and experienced in those waters for catching marlin.  I like fishermen who are well connected locally, since I've found they have the best shot at catching the fish.

No Half-Day Saltwater Fishing Trip for Me

When I go marlin fishing, I want to go for the entire day.  Sometimes just getting to the fish can take a few hours.  The big fish I caught involved the longest boat ride.  We went from the harbor in Cabo all the way around into the Sea of Cortez.  Apparently the marlin were chasing the bait that had been blown into the sea by a big storm offshore.  That particular day there were 3 of us saltwater fishing.  All three of us caught a marlin.  Each of us fought to bring our fish successfully to the boat for no less than 45 minutes.  My arms were shaking from exhaustion from reeling and fighting.  I honestly couldn't believe he was so huge.

Another saltwater fishing day I'll never forget is the one where the marlin just were not to be found.  We ended up, though, in a school of yellowfin tuna.  They were swimming and jumping and catching bait fish like crazy.  We'd no sooner get our line out and one would hit.  I reckon landing a yellowfin somewhat akin to hauling up a Toyota from the bottom of the sea.  No sooner would I get the fish to the boat, then he would dive.  You'd hear the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz of the reel with the line going out.  These were NOT release fish though.  We took our fish back and gave a few to the locals.  The others we took to the restaurant and asked them to prepare us some sashimi and then grill some tuna steaks for us.  Talk about good eating!  Guess what the special on the menu for the night was?  Fresh caught yellowfin tuna.
