The best tuna steak recipes
Whether you've been invited to a barbeque or you're hosting a dinner party, your guests are bound to be impressed if you try out some simple tuna steak recipes. Some people can be a little afraid of trying new recipes, especially if the main ingredient is seen as a premium and expensive item but tuna steaks are fairly difficult to get wrong and they're cheaper than good quality beef steak and just as impressive.
These days it's important to buy tuna steak that is dolphin friendly and that hasn't been frozen, that way you'll be making sure your purchase is ethical and you'll be getting the tuna steaks with the most flavour. Tuna steak is great marinated which makes it perfect for a dinner party where you would rather spend time with your guests than slaving over a hot stove and emerging sweaty and flustered to friends who feel ever so slightly abandoned as a result.
Whatever you decide to flavour your tuna steaks with, place them in a deep Pyrex dish, season well with salt and pepper and rub in before pouring over the marinade and turning the tuna steaks a few times to ensure they are fully coated. Cover the dish with cling film and place in the fridge overnight, please note that tuna is a fresh fish product and should be consumed within 24 hours of being bought. Great ideas for marinades include soy sauce and honey; lemon, parsley and chilli or ginger and coriander and they don't require a lot of preparation, simply mix the marinade, season the steaks and marinade overnight.
Once you're ready to cook the tuna steaks, drain them of excess marinade and place in a pre-heating griddle pan for around three minutes on each side. Do not move or squash the steaks when they're in the pan as this will ruin the charred griddle lines and squeeze out valuable flavour; to check whether they're done on the first side, lift one edge carefully using a pair of tongs and if they're done, continue to lift and carefully turn over, if not, gently lower them back down for an extra minute or so.
Tuna steak is great served with fresh avocado salsa or tomato salsa and a fresh green salad with a glass of rosé in the summer or at a barbeque or for a winter dish, try serving with wasabi mashed potato and some steamed vegetables or some spicy rice and black peas and a glass of Fairtrade red wine.
