My Baitcaster Drag Has Weakened?
I've been using my baitcaster for about 2 years now and the drag has always been quite strong. Until recently, the drag power has drastically decreased. Line strips even when ripping a jerkbait through the water. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I checked the washers and there's nothing on them. Thanks for the help!
time to replace the drag washers. just the fibre ones, not the metal ones.
leaving the drag tight all the time squeezes the washers, smashing them and flattening them out. some become stuck to the metal ones and over time, just lose their resiliency and drag capability.
l always back off the drags on all my reels (spinners too). l just need to remember to reset it in the mornings when l begin fishing. setting the hook with the drag backed off all the way can give as big a backlash as a faulty cast.
l know this from personal experience.
the other reason may be too much oil on the drag washers. over lubing can be almost as big a problem as under lubing. on most reels, the drag washers are supposed to remain dry, the drag being created by friction in the washers. no friction - no drag.
