Modern lure fishing had its origins in a method that appears very neglected today: that of wobbling dead fish on special flights. Using freshly killed coarse fish with their swim bladders intact, simply attached by two trebles, and mounted so the tail is kinked, wobbled deadbaits are buoyant and lethally effective when drawn over shallows with heavy weed growth. The more disturbance they make the better, and the parallel with fishing a floating plug is obvious. You can mimic the diving plug by adding lead to the head of the fish. In fact, a method to try when deadhaiting for pike in rivers, is to insert a short length of steel bar into the throat of the bait. This is then fished sink-and-draw style and the action is tremendous, especially against a current. As the fish is drawn towards you, it appears to swim quite normally, but slacken off and the bait dives. This is irresistible to pike.
Deadbait spinning was the forerunner of spinning with artificials, with the bait attached to special mounts equipped with vanes at the bait's head to make it revolve rapidly when drawn through the water. In particular, fishing with surface lures can be heart-stopping stuff, and it is an unforgettable sight to see a big pike launch itself from the depths and clear the water in an explosion of spray with your plug clamped firmly in its jaws.

what's the best way to fish for pike/trout in a slow moving shallow river?
i normally fish for pike with deadbait on two trebles with a float, trout using a swimfeed full of maggots on the bottom. the thing is i always fish on still water. so a moving shallow river is new to me, can anyone tell me the best way? thanks.
