There are many excellent walleye artificial lures that work in different situations but by far the most universal artificial that constantly catches walleye is the lead head jig manufactured with the walleye in mind. If you think about it, there is an excellent reason the walleye jig is so universal. Walleye spend the majority of there time on the bottom of what ever type of water they are located in.
A walleye jig is truly a diverse artificial bait and can be fished in a multiple of different ways for different type of water and seasonal situations.You can anchor your boat and cast for walleye,you can drift your boat and use bottom bouncers or do vertical jigging techniques for walleye, or you can do a slow troll using either bottom bouncers or plain jigs. Also you can fish a walleye jig tipped with live bait or plain, it depends how the walleye are biting that day.
Casting walleye fishing jigs
The most widely used jigging for walleye fishing technique is casting and this technique works great in shallow water.If the walleyes are in the shallows it's important not to spook them. Make sure you anchor far enough away, but still being able to cast into the shallows.
If you plan on working a shallow reef , anchor in a deep water position , so the the wind will push you to the edge of the reef. If you get no walleye bites, pull up the anchor and move about 20 yards to your left or right and drop anchor again. Continue this process untill you find the walleye.
If the walleye are not schooled, and are located at different points about the reef, or breakline, drift your your boat near the reef or breakline but but not on it, then cast your wallye fishing jig towards the shallows working the jig back towards you.Use your trolling motor to keep you boat drifting parallel to the reef or breakline. If you catch a walleye toss out a marker and work the area until the fish stop biting then move on.
If the walleyes are suspended off the bottom , count your jig for walleye down to different depths after you cast then begin to reel your line in. It is very important that you remember your count when you got your walleye hit. I will usually write the count down on paper for future use. Now repeat the same count and begin working the area.
Remember casting jigs for walleye work best when the fish or in the shallows.

OK I'm going fishing for walleye this weekend on Oneida lake. Its not a very deep lake but its one of the best in the country for walleye. The best place to catch them is supposed to be near these two islands in the middle of the lake. Its about 20 to 30 ft deep. I went there last week and there was tons of people fishing there and they were catching them like crazy. But i didn't catch one. I was jigging and had a worm at the end of the jig. How do i catch these walleye? What bait is best? Should i use deep diving crank baits or troll with a spinner or keep jigging? I need techniques and tips. Also, any one who has every fished Oneida lake in New York any tips or hot spots? Thanks!
Walleye can be hard to catch. What they like around my house is a couple things. They usually run about 27 feet.... A good setup is a crawler harness trailing about 6 feet behind a bottom bouncer. Troll it about 1.5 mph and see what you get. Another good way to catch them is with a lure called a "hot-n-tot" they are a really deep running crank bait. Put that about 8 feet behind a bottom bouncer and troll about the same speed. If you are using jigs use either a green, pink, orange, or red jig head. Another great lure is called a "erie deery" they have a goofy shaped weight with a blade spinner and a long hook on the back. Take a crawler and put it on the hook. Cast it out as far as you can and then let it sink to the bottom. Once on the bottom, Give it decent "yanks" and then let it settle to the bottom again and repeat.
Those are the best methods I have found. They like salty things...so maybe get some power bait or eggs.....All you have to do is try things out and best of luck!
